RSPCA officers and police officers have recently completed a series of raids on properties across Birmingham and recovered a number fighting dogs. The dogs had been subjected to sparring bouts and all had injuries to suggest they had been in fights and had suffered injuries as a result. The officers reported that they had recovered dog fighting equipment including treadmills and veterinary kits used to treat injured animals. The officers also found cockerels at the houses based in the Small Heath and Lozells area.
The West Midlands is amongst many areas of the UK to see a recent upsurge in the number of fighting dogs being rescued as well as an increase in their owners abandoning them. Across the country the majority of animal shelters and rescue homes are reporting a rise of as much as 80 per cent in the numbers of fighting pit bull type dogs that are being bought in with many shelters unable to cope with the numbers.
